What is Invisalign?
Invisalign San MarcosThe Invisalign technology is a series of clear, removable teeth aligners that both orthodontists and dentists use as an alternative to traditional metal dental braces. Veneers

New Smile – New You!
Veneers are the new superhero of the cosmetic dentistry industry. They combat all the villains of flawed smiles: tooth discoloration, uneven spacing, chips, cracks, worn enamel and even missing teeth. A set of veneers, managed by a cosmetic dentist, can save the day for any smile in danger. A veneer is, in essence, a permanent mask that is placed over a problem tooth. The veneer is usually made out of composite resin or porcelain and is created specifically for the patient's teeth. Cosmetic dentists use veneers to improve the aesthetic appearance of a tooth, set of teeth or a full smile. Placing veneers is a multi-step process that requires an experienced cosmetic dentist and strong communication with the patient. The dentist is both a skilled medical practitioner and a careful artist. Once the dentist and patient agree that veneers are the best solution to meet the patient's dissatisfaction with her smile, the dentist will then work closely with the patient to determine the best shape, size and color of the veneers. This is where the artistic part comes in. There are as many different smiles as there are people in the world, and veneers should match the coloring, style, face shape and preference of the patient.

One important question a patient must decide is whether to choose composite or porcelain veneers. Composite veneers cost between $250 - $1,500 per tooth and last between 5 and 7 years. Porcelain veneers can last from 10 to 15 years. Their higher quality comes with a heftier price tag. Expect to pay from $925 to $2,500 per porcelain tooth. Composite veneers are gaining in popularity as new advances have extended their shelf life and durability. On the first visit, the dentist will measure and prepare the patient's teeth for veneers. This includes reshaping the teeth to fit with the veneers. When the patient's teeth have been prepared, an impression is taken. A mold will be created from this impression. Technicians will use the mold to craft veneers specifically for the patient's teeth.

Some larger cosmetic dentistry offices boast their own labs where veneers are fabricated in house, however, most dentists send a patient’s mold, along with careful instructions, to an outside lab that specializes in the creation of veneers. While the veneers are being crafted, the dentist will often place temporary veneers on the patient's teeth. Temporaries allow the patient to get a sense of what the real veneers will look like, while the dentist can determine if any final adjustments need to be made to the permanent veneers. The patient will return to the cosmetic dentist's office in a few weeks when the permanent veneers are ready. At this time, the dentist will remove the temporaries and bond the permanent veneers over the patient’s teeth using a resin cement.

Unfortunately, veneers are not permanent and must eventually be replaced. They can also crack or become stained if the patient does not care for the properly. A cosmetic dentist should thoroughly instruct the patient on how to manage and protect her new veneers. Veneers can give anyone the confidence and beauty of a perfect smile. Dr. Allred is an experienced cosmetic dentist who has helped many patients discover their perfect smiles through the use of veneers. He can answer all of your questions about veneers, walk you through the process and help you determine if veneers are the best option for your specific complaint.
