Not Everyone Has Dental Pain
Dental pain has been compared to child birth in its pain severity and can ruin your life. Although not everyone with an oral problem has dental pain, but everyone who has dental pain has some dental problem. Dental pain has many origins, some of which are infection, TMJ disorder, muscle spasms, occlusal disease, gum disease and cavities. Dental pain can be classified into two main categories:
1 . Infection
2 . Occlusal disease.
Infection in the mouth usually derives from bacteria. Bacteria infect teeth on the surface using sugar to create acid which then causes cavities in teeth. When cavities get large enough they infect the nerves inside the tooth. The tooth infection will then expand and could cause an abscess or the infection could reach the heart or other vital organs if not cared for. At any point along the spectrum of disease dental pain will be present. Bacteria can also infect the gums that surround the teeth; this is can be either periodontitis, which includes bone loss, or gingivitis, which just affects the gums. This infection has been shown to affect the heart specifically and will cause pain over time and a decrease in overall health. The other source of dental pain is occlusal disease. It is estimated that Occlusal disease is present in about 70% of adults and the majority of them are not aware of it. Occlusal disease is the disharmony of the teeth as they relate to the TMJ (Temperomandibular Joint) or jaw joints and the muscles that help us chew and speak. When the teeth are not coordinated they can cause the muscles surrounding the joints to spasm. These spasms can derange the joint itself if not cared for early on in occlusal disease. It can also cause tooth sensitivity, gum recession, tooth chipping and fracture, and headaches. The earlier that we treat occlusal disease the lower the cost as well as the damage is minimized tremendously. Pain from occlusal disease is managed over many visits and a coordinated effort between the patient and the dentist and has a good outcome when treatment is completed. Some symptoms that differentiate between occlusal disease and infection are pain to cold that lasts longer than 10 seconds usually is an infected tooth. Also spontaneous tooth pain that wakes you up at night also indicates that you might need a root canal. Minor chipping, craze lines, larger fractures and cracks indicate occlusal disease. Gum recession, mobile teeth, clinching and grinding, flat worn teeth and spreading of teeth also are signs of occlusal disease.
How to Manage Dental Pain
When you are diagnosed with dental pain, depending on the source of the problem, you have options as to what you should do. If there is a cavity you should have it removed and a filling placed in its stead. If you have a nerve infection then you need to either have a root canal or remove the tooth and place a dental implant. If your source of pain is because of occlusal disease a thorough analysis is required to determine what the best approach is to fix your problem. Once the analysis is completed the usual treatment options range from minor adjustments of the teeth to braces to full mouth reconstruction. Almost all of the options involve an occlusal guard at some point of the treatment along with further visits to analyze the joint position in relation to the teeth.
