Common Questions From Our Dental Patients

At Allred Dental, we're here to guide our patients through any dental care goal or concern they may have. When patients come to us with questions, Dr. Allred and his team are happy to provide the expert guidance they need. Some of the most frequently asked questions from our dental patients include:

Why is flossing important?

Flossing can reach areas a toothbrush can't, helping to clear food and plaque away from the teeth and gum line at a deeper level. When plaque is left untreated, tartar can form, creating deep pockets within the gums that can contribute to periodontal disease and loosening of the teeth.

What causes cavities?

Dental cavities are most often caused by exposure to foods high in sugar and starch, including soda, baked goods, candy and sweet snacks.

Are dental AX-rays necessary and safe?

Dental X-rays are a tool that helps the dentist monitor changes to your smile, providing a deeper look at the health of the teeth and surrounding structures. At our office, we use modern, safe dental x-rays that are operated with minimal radiation exposure to the patient.

What causes tooth sensitivity?

Tooth sensitivity can be caused by a number of factors, including tooth decay, gum recession, or wear to the tooth enamel.

What type of toothbrush and toothpaste should I use?

Our dentists recommend using a toothbrush with soft bristles for two minutes at a time, twice per day. Powered and manual toothbrushes can both clean the teeth effectively, but toothbrushes should be replaced every 3-4 months, or sooner if the bristles become bent.

Most toothpastes will adequately clear bacteria and acids. For the strengthening benefit of fluoride, look for toothpaste with the American Dental Association Seal of Acceptance. If you experience tooth sensitivity, discuss this with your dentist to determine the best toothpaste for you.

How long do dental implants last?

Dental implants are designed to last for decades, up to a lifetime with proper care, maintenance and oral health habits.

When should I be concerned about my dental health?

We recommend contacting our dental office to schedule a visit if you expereince any of the following symptoms:

  • Mouth pain
  • Jaw pain
  • Swollen face or gums
  • Excess tooth sensitivity
  • Oral injury or tooth damage
  • Bleeding gums
  • Dry mouth
  • Bad breath

Tracking these symptoms and receiving a thorough exam is recommended to help keep disease and other conditions at bay.

Why do I need to visit the dentist regularly?

Maintaining your regularly scheduled dental exams about twice per year, helps your dentist spot potential oral health conditions early on and helps you avoid more costly treatments down the road. Consult with your dentist to determine your recommended treatment schedule for your optimal oral health.

What is the best way to whiten my smile?

With many over-the-counter whitening products available, many teeth whitening options exist today, but none are as potent and effective as a professional teeth whitening treatment provided by your dentist. Ask your dentist about a fast in-office whitening treatment or a take-home whitening kit with professional-grade gel for the most noticeable results.

How can I restore or correct the appearance of my smile?

Smile imperfections can be corrected or covered with a number of dental procedures, including dental crowns, dental bonding, and veneers. At a consultation with your dentist, they will assess your smile, goals, and oral health to determine the best treatment plan for your needs.
